The Harbour Within

A Book of Simple Spirituality

By Sister Consilio

  • Hardback
  • £14.99

An inspiring book of down-to-earth spirituality for anyone searching for a sense of peace in today's world

In today's busy world, we can get caught up with the worries and stresses of life. We live in our heads, as we move at lightning pace from one thing to the next.
Here, in The Harbour Within, Sister Consilio of Cuan Mhuire suggests how we can live happier and more peaceful lives by learning to live from the soul instead of our heads.
From a seven-day guide to living at soul level, to thoughts and inspirations to carry you through difficult times, The Harbour Within shows us how we can discover a place of peace, unconditional love and joy - a harbour within.

'When we move out of our heads and begin to live at soul level, we open ourselves to a life with unconditional love: one that strives to reach beyond thought, expectation, emotion and feeling' Sister Consilio

Biographical Notes

Sister Consilio was born in 1937 in Brosna, County Kerry. She was one of seven children and her upbringing in Kerry with her parents and brothers and sisters had a profound effect on her faith, establishing in her a spirituality which has carried her through life.
After training as a nurse and midwife, Sister Consilio joined the Sisters of Mercy in Athy, County Kildare at the age of twenty-two. While working in St Vincent's Hospital in Athy, she came into contact with many 'road men' - men who used to travel round with no home to call their own. It was through meeting the 'road men' that Sister Consilio had the idea to provide a place of safety and love for people with no home. There are now five Cuan Mhuire rehabilitation centres throughout Ireland providing help and treatment for those in addiction.
Sister Consilio still works at the Cuan Mhuire centres, helping those in need.

The 50 Francis Street Photographer

Suzanne Behan
Authors:
Suzanne Behan

From the 1950s to the 1990s, John Walsh ran his photography business out of a small shop on 50 Francis Street in inner city Dublin. For over forty years, he took thousands of photos on all aspects of Dublin life - funerals, communions, weddings, christening, concerts, and events. Here in this collection, for the first time ever, the images from the 50s and 60s are brought together with the words of his granddaughter Suzanne Behan to give us a unique and nostalgic look of an integral part of changing city. From religious processions and Dublin traditions, to when women drank in the snug and the 'good suit' came in and out of the pawn shop when needed, The 50 Francis Street Photographer is a collection of stunning, original photographs, a fascinating social history and celebration of people and places.

A Force for Justice

Michael Clifford
Authors:
Michael Clifford

The full story of the single greatest scandal in Irish policing history - from the journalist who brought it into the national arena. When, in 2008, Sergeant Maurice McCabe complained of shoddy investigations into serious crime in County Cavan, nothing could have prepared him for what was in store.A career garda, McCabe never set out to be a whistleblower. However, over the following eight years, he exposed gross incompetence and corruption within An Garda Siochána. It ranged from a violent criminal being free to murder, to country-wide corruption in the policing of road safety.Along the way he paid a terrible price, enduring vilification, bullying and harassment by forces who wanted to silence him and his inconvenient truths. Worse still were the rumours of an extreme nature, which had a devastating effect on his whole family.McCabe's actions ultimately led to some of the biggest reforms of An Garda Siochána since the foundation of the state, caused major political upheaval, and culminated in a Tribunal established in 2017, to examine whether there had been a smear campaign against him within the force.A Force For Justice reveals the story behind the scenes, of one man struggling to survive in the most challenging of circumstances. It is a dramatic account of a garda sergeant's journey from a rural outpost into the heart of the Irish political and legal system.

Dublin Since 1922 tells the story of Ireland's capital city since independence. Richly illustrated throughout, it unfolds around hundreds of dates in the city's history, beginning with the founding of the Irish state - when Dublin had the worst slums in Europe - and ending in the last days of the Celtic Tiger.Through major events, Carey charts nearly a century of the capital's history, from the Civil War, the Eucharistic Congress and President Kennedy's visit, to the 1986 earthquake, the Stardust disaster and the changing faces of the St Patrick's Day parade.Brought to life are the figures who have shaped the city's identity - from Archbishop McQuaid to Tony Gregory, from Luke Kelly to Maeve Binchy - and the daily life of its people, through the books they read, the way they move around the city, the music they listen to, the crimes they commit and the unique experiences they have of simply being in the city of Dublin.A captivating celebration of people and place, this book makes essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how the character of a city - and its inhabitants - is shaped.
